Divine Compassion by Fr. Carl Arico, reflecting on Rembrandt’s famous painting, Return of the Prodigal Son, by one of the founders of Contemplative Outreach. As in the gospel parable, many of us begin life similar to the younger son, whose selfishness became a “fixed point of reference,” believing the world revolved him, Fr. Carl said. As we mature, we grow more responsible, like the older son. However, if our personal growth remains at that level, our spiritual life stagnates. The call, he explained, is to become like the father, a man of deep compassion and excellent service.
